Epistolary Writing

November 08, 2016 by Tammy Wright in Reading

There is a magical place where my love of missives, journals, and reading collide. It's called the epistolary novel. Over the years I have noticed a pattern - many of my all time favorite stories are told in the form of letters and diaries. This style of writing is known as epistolary writing.

As a young girl, I remember getting lost in "I Capture the Castle" and not wanting to put it down. As a teenager, confused about religion, I loved how C.S. Lewis entertained me with the satirical letters from Screwtape. And, as a grown woman, I learned just how powerful letters can be thanks to "The Color Purple" by Alice Walker.

This year Book Riot published an article, "100 Must-Read Epistolary Novels From The Past and Present." It's a great read and resource. I had no idea there were so many of these novels out there and I can't wait to check out some of the titles.

What is your favorite writing style? Do you enjoy epistolary novels? Any suggestions for me? I'd love to discover more.

Highlights From Lakeland Public Library Mail Art Workshop

November 05, 2016 by Tammy Wright in Letter Writing

This weekend I led a mail art workshop at the Lakeland Public Library. I had a wonderful group of participants. There were good vibes in the room and a contagious spirit of creativity.

A big thank you to the Friends of the Library for making this workshop possible. They provided all the materials and supplies which I organized into kits. I like making kits and the library appreciates my need to assemble things neatly.

As with past workshops, I shared my own letter writing background and how I got involved with snail mail groups like Letter Writers Alliance. As an LWA member, I'm always working to earn Inklings. Participants made several mail art projects including an origami folded envelope.

The main goal of the workshop is to encourage good old fashioned letter writing. Postage was provided and, luckily, a mail box is located just outside the front door of the library. Several letters were mailed so I consider the event a success. Happy weekend and Write More Letters!

Outgoing: 19th Century Inspired Letters

November 02, 2016 by Tammy Wright in Letter Writing

This month my letters are greatly inspired by the television show, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. It's a beautifully filmed story about two men destined to bring magic back to 19th century England. The sets feature the most gorgeous libraries and book collections. And, most importantly, there is much letter writing.

Early in the show, letters meant for Jonathan Strange are stolen and read by Mr. Norrell. They are beautifully written, folded, and sealed with wax. I loved watching the opening of each letter and attempted to recreate them. I hope my pen pals enjoy the simple beauty.
